3:10 to Yuma
I am a sucker for a good western, and 3:10 to Yuma is a bloody good western. The title is pretty weird, basically Russell Crowe is a bandit who robs stage coaches, he is caught and the sheriff has to take him to a city called Prosperance to catch the 3:10 train to Yuma where he will be trialed and hung. Christian Bale plays a humble farmer who lost his leg in the civil war. He is on the verge of bankruptcy and agrees to help the sheriff take Russell Crowe for $10000.
Russell Crowe is great in Yuma, and I usually don't like him. For the first 20 minutes I thought he was the good guy, he plays a very charming baddie. Christian Bale is good at playing the affronted father, but you know Batman will kick some ass by the end of the movie.
If 3:10 is still playing near you its worth seeing, otherwise you should get the DVD when it comes out. I give 3:10 to Yuma 4 waffles.
The Heartbreak Kid
The Heartbreak Kid is a pretty decent romantic comedy staring Ben Stiller, who worked with the Farrelly brothers on Something About Mary. The plot is pretty bad - Ben Stiller meets & marries a girl in the first 15 mins and on his honeymoon in Mexico falls in love with another girl. Ben Stiller would have nailed the role 10 years ago, but I think he's kindof sick of these movies now. They should have used Arthur Spooner and Rob Corduroy more, and left Carlos Mancia on the cutting room floor. I think the Heartbreak Kid is worth seeing, I LMAO 8 times during the movie, but I definitely didn't think it was funny from start to end. In fact the last 45 minutes seem to drag.
HK is rated 18+ in Canada, I think some of the other Farrelly movies have been more risque (the one where the guy falls in love with his sister) but there is one sex scene that is so over the top it reminds me of the puppet-sex scene in Team America. Heartbreak Kid gets 2.5 waffles.
i saw blades of glory tonight and it was probably the funniest movie I've seen so far this year. its about these two ice skaters who are rivals & have to skate together in doubles to get back into the olympics. its another will ferrel movie where the plot can be summed up in one sentence. a lot of people don't like will ferrel, I think hes hilarious, every line he delivers is brillaint.
nobody hated napolean dynamite as much as me, but i have to admit jon heder was great in this movie, he was good in school of scoundrels too, if he stays away from the doofus-napolean roles he should do well.
pam from the office plays the love interest of jon heders character. I guess she's cute, but she really is a terrible actress, the role was badly written, her character didnt make any sense, but she really made a mess of the role.
just like anchorman & talladege nights, the best part of the movie is the first half hour, the joke definitely does start gettign pretty thin in the last 45 mins of the move. my favorite scene was when will ferrel was explaining how he got his tattoos, and the chase scene on skates was great.
so ... blades of glory gets 4/5 waffles.
I've already seen a few good movies so fat this year, so I thought I'd keep a list of them, and then at the end of the year I'll know which movies I want to go back and watch again
- 300 - the whole movie is just fight after fight (the opposite Ghost Rider)
- Pan's Labyrinth - should've got the Oscar for best movie
- Pursuit of Hapyness - I underestimated this movie, it looked too cheesy, but Will Smith is great in this one
- Reno 911 - every scene is hilarious, I haven't seen the tv show, but I'm gonna now
- School of Scoundrels - hot Aussie chick in this one
- Blades of Glory - Will Ferrel as a bad boy ice skater, how can you go wrong?
Pan's Labyrinth is the best movie I've seen in a long time. I didn't know much about the movie going into it, but after seeing the trailer I thought it was like the Chronicles of Narnia in Spanish. The movie starts off with a girl Ofelia driving with her pregnant mother to go live with her stepdad. He is the Captain of an army, and he's pretty much an evil SOB. Ofelia gets a visit from a fairy in the middle of the night who leads her into this massive labyrinth in the Captain's garden, where she meets a faun. The faun has had 1000s of different names that only the trees can pronounce. The faun tells Ofelia that he thinks she is the reincarnated spirit of a princess from the underworld, but he needs her to complete three tasks to prove it. Ofelia than returns home where she has to deal with the mean stepfather and trying to placate her pre-occupied mother. She does work on the tasks, but the majority of the movie dwells more on the Captain's war with the resistance. The scenery and costumes look amazing, and I'm not usually one who notices that stuff. The special effects were a bit cheesy I thought, especially the faun, and the giant bull frog. Fortunately the story is the strongest part of the movie. It definitely looks like a children's movie, and I did see a few under-10 years olds in the theatre. There were 3 or 4 scenes that I thought were a tad too graphic. Did I mention how scary this movie is? I would definitely recommend seeing Pan's Labyrinth on the big screen, waiting for the DVD is not an option for this movie. Oh, and it is in Spanish with English subtitles. I'd give Pan's Labyrinth …. 4 out of 5.
