living in residence vs. living in a house

I vote for residence. Getting to know and making lots of friends early in college is key to being popular and included in activities. That's the college life, especially as a freshman. Once you are established and known, you can move out and still be social. If you start out as a "townie" you will be branded and labeled as that. If you get an old residence hall, just hope you don't get the community bathroom and showers (unless, of course the dorm is co-ed). The more modern buildings are more like small motel rooms.
